The Joetsu/Myoko area is a unique micro-climate and known throughout Japan as one of the places with the highest amounts of rain and snow each year. Recently, January, 2021 brought close to 200cm of snow over a two day period. 1945 recorded 377cm in just one day. The ski areas surrounding Mount Myoko (2,454m) are consistently some of the deepest snow in all of Japan. An added advantage of the area is its proximity to Tokyo via the Shinkansen.
Designing and building for an area such as Joetsu requires diligent planning and experienced craftsmanship. When not built correctly your maintenance and re-building budgets will have to be prepared for premature damage. Generic or customized building designs suited to temperate Japan are not what you will require to handle this climate. Initial cost, however important, is secondary to quality as you think about the lifetime of your investment and possible re-sale values. You will need proven experience and reliable design done by a reputable builder.
